It’s a one in hundred-thousand occurrence.  Maybe less. The Waco Police Association (WPA) has chosen to publicize the cities horrendous crime rates and of all places — on public billboards!

The Waco police department who claims to be dramatically understaffed for the task of patrolling the streets and caring for the public safety, have taken their fight for more officers and better pay to the streets.  After several years of acrimonious budgetary battles with the city counsel, the limitations of the police department had reached critical mass. According to the Waco Police Association, more officers and better equipment are desperately needed to investigate crime, handle public emergencies and maintain a  criminal deterrence. Thus when negotiations over salaries and more manpower bottomed-out at the negotiating table, the Waco Police Association took the issues to the street for everyone — the locals, the tourists and Baylor University students, their parents and alumni to see.

Any winners in the Battle of the Bucks?

City Manager Larry Groth says the police got the same offer as the rest of the city employees, while the WPA staunchly says that’s not nearly enough to accomplish their mission. So the ugly statistics and public acrimony will stay put — till somebody makes the green flow a little freer in Waco.

The weather in Waco — like most of Texas is notorious for it’s volatility.  One hour warm, the next cold.  Pouring down rain on our side of town and my daughter, only a mile away at some friend’s house says, “It’s dry as a bone here Dad!”.   Recently I’ve noted some 35 degree changes from night to afternoon the next day.  Pile on the covers at bedtime and set the thermostat to cozy and then awaken sweating like I’ve been transported to a summer hut in the Congo by the middle of the night.  There’s just something intrinsically cock-eyed about the temperature going up when it’s dark outside.  Darkness and cold go together in my book.  Ghosts always lurk in dark, cold places.  Snakes, cold-blooded and slithery like dank, shadowy holes.  Uranus, that tiny planetoid on the edge of the solar system is what? –everybody now — dark and cold.  So to have it getting warm in the middle of the night seems like an more-than-slight twist of nature.  But then again, that’s Waco, Texas for you.
